On Thursday, MSNBC host and co-host Rachel Maddow opened up about how she gets around the gym by wearing headphones, which she says “takes you back to the early days of cellphones and texting.”
“If you have a cellphone and you’re in a public place, it’s like you’re playing in the woods with your kids,” Maddow said.
“You’re on a cell phone, you’re just playing in a forest.
You’re in the middle of a forest and you don’t know what’s happening.
You can’t even hear your own breathing.
I mean, you’ve got headphones and you can’t hear your body, but you’re still trying to figure out what’s going on.
You just want to relax and get your mind out of it.
You don’t want to be doing anything.
You want to just be resting.””
I’m just trying to get my mind out,” Maddows said.”
You’re not doing anything,” co-anchor Chris Matthews chimed in.”
Are you a robot?”
“No,” Maddowing said.
“[Maddow] can’t do this.
You know that.”
The topic of why people wear headphones came up when Maddow was interviewing a friend of her who is in her late 30s.
The woman, who was not named, said she doesn’t really care about her own fitness.
“I think the only reason I wear headphones is because I have to,” she said.
Maddow responded that, while her friend may have been correct that she doesn, “You know, there’s so much more to life than exercise.
I just like being in the zone.”
